Hyderabad Doctors Remove Massive Chest Tumour in 10-Hour Life-Saving Surgery

A 36-year-old woman from West Bengal has been given a new lease on life after doctors successfully removed a massive chest tumour at Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre in Vidyanagar, Hyderabad.

The tumour, measuring 15×10 cm—larger than an electronic tablet, was located in the right side of her chest (Right Hemithorax Fibromatosis) and was dangerously close to vital organs including the heart and lungs. The patient had been suffering from severe breathing difficulties and chronic chest pain.

After several hospitals considered the surgery too risky and expensive, the family approached Dr U. Azad Chandrasekhar, Surgical Oncologist and Medical Director at Renova Cancer Centre. Following detailed diagnostic tests including CECT, PET-CT scan, and True-Cut biopsy, the medical team designed a precise treatment plan.

Instead of removing the entire lung—a common approach in such cases—the team performed an advanced VATS-guided excision, carefully removing only the tumour while preserving the lung.

The complex surgery lasted nearly 8–10 hours, with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff working in close coordination.

Doctors confirmed that:
• The tumour was successfully removed without damaging the heart or lungs
• The patient recovered well and was discharged within 10 days
• The hospital provided the treatment at minimal cost considering the patient’s financial situation

Dr Azad Chandrasekhar praised the coordinated efforts of the medical team and reaffirmed the centre’s commitment to providing advanced and affordable treatment for rare cancers.

The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude to the entire team for their dedication, professionalism, and compassionate care that restored their hope.
