No More Overhead Power Lines? How TGSPDCL’s Underground Cabling Project Will Transform Hyderabad

Hyderabad is moving towards a major transformation of its electricity distribution network, with plans to shift large sections of the city’s overhead power lines underground. The ambitious initiative by the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) is aimed at improving power reliability, strengthening public safety and giving the city a cleaner streetscape.

The wider underground cabling programme has received attention for its potential to reduce the number of electricity poles and overhead wires across several important parts of Hyderabad. Official TGSPDCL documents describe underground cabling as a key part of modernising the city’s distribution infrastructure. TGSPDCL

A Major Step Towards Modernising Hyderabad’s Power Network

Hyderabad’s existing electricity network includes extensive overhead lines, which can create challenges in densely populated urban areas. Wires and poles can also interfere with road expansion, construction activity and other urban infrastructure.

The proposed underground network is intended to replace significant portions of these overhead systems with underground cables. TGSPDCL has already begun moving the project towards implementation through tenders for multiple divisions. TG Southern Power

The project is expected to cover key areas across Hyderabad and Secunderabad, including:

  • Banjara Hills
  • Secunderabad Cantonment
  • Paradise
  • Saifabad
  • Bowenpally
  • Mehdipatnam
  • Charminar
  • Greenlands
  • Begum Bazar
  • Asmangadh
  • Azamabad

These divisions are among the areas currently covered by TGSPDCL’s underground cabling tenders. The New Indian Express

What Will Change on Hyderabad’s Roads?

One of the most visible changes will be the gradual removal of overhead electrical infrastructure in locations where underground cabling is installed.

Instead of relying on poles and exposed distribution lines along major roads, electricity will increasingly be carried through underground cable systems.

In narrower lanes and areas where underground conversion of all lines may not be practical, aerial bundled cables (AB cables) are planned for certain low-tension networks. The New Indian Express

This means the transformation will not necessarily look identical in every neighbourhood. The type of electrical infrastructure used will depend on local conditions and engineering requirements.

Why Is Underground Cabling Important?

1. Improved Public Safety

Overhead electrical lines can be vulnerable to accidental damage, storms and contact with other infrastructure. Moving suitable sections underground can reduce exposure to several of these risks.

2. Better Power Reliability

TGSPDCL has identified improved reliability and reduced fault-related problems among the expected benefits of the investment. Underground distribution can help create a more resilient network when properly designed and maintained. TGERC

3. Cleaner Cityscape

One of the easiest benefits for residents to notice will be visual.

Fewer poles and overhead wires can create cleaner road corridors, particularly along major commercial and high-traffic routes.

4. Better Use of Roadside Space

Electricity poles currently occupy valuable space along many roads. Reducing the dependence on overhead infrastructure can make it easier to coordinate electricity networks with other urban services and road infrastructure.

5. Support for Future Urban Growth

Hyderabad is expanding rapidly, and its electricity network needs to keep pace with increasing residential, commercial and industrial demand.

Modernising the distribution network now could make it easier to accommodate future infrastructure requirements.

How Large Is the Project?

The underground cabling programme represents a major infrastructure investment. TGSPDCL’s official project documents describe a broad transition from conventional overhead distribution to underground systems across Hyderabad’s urban network. The documents also indicate that the proposed work involves survey and feasibility studies, engineering and design, procurement, installation, integration, testing, commissioning and subsequent operation and maintenance. TGSPDCL

A separate regulatory filing states that the Telangana government had formally approved the conversion of overhead cables to underground cabling in the relevant urban area in November 2025 and that TGSPDCL planned substantial capital expenditure for priority zones. TGERC

Work Has Already Moved Into the Tender Stage

This is not simply a long-term proposal. TGSPDCL has begun inviting tenders for individual divisions.

Its current tender listings include underground conversion works in Saifabad, Paradise, Cantonment, Asmangadh, Mehdipatnam, Charminar, Greenlands, Bowenpally, Banjara Hills, Begum Bazar and Azamabad. TG Southern Power

This indicates that implementation is being structured division by division rather than treating the entire city as one single construction package.

What Could Residents Expect During Construction?

The benefits may be significant, but the transition will not be completely disruption-free.

Underground cable installation requires excavation, cable laying, construction of supporting infrastructure and connection to the existing electricity network. Residents and businesses in affected areas could therefore experience temporary traffic restrictions, road work and local construction activity.

The long-term objective is to create a more modern distribution system, but residents should expect some short-term inconvenience while individual sections are being converted.

A More Modern Hyderabad

The underground cabling initiative fits into a broader effort to modernise Hyderabad’s urban infrastructure.

A city with fewer overhead electricity wires could improve the appearance of major roads while also addressing operational and safety concerns associated with an ageing or congested distribution network.

However, the success of the project will ultimately depend on quality of construction, proper maintenance, effective coordination with other utilities and timely completion. Simply putting cables underground does not automatically guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply.

Conclusion

Hyderabad is preparing for a significant change in the way electricity is distributed across several parts of the city. TGSPDCL’s underground cabling programme aims to replace substantial sections of overhead infrastructure with underground networks, while using aerial bundled cables in certain locations where appropriate.

The expected outcome is a city with fewer electricity poles, reduced overhead wiring, improved infrastructure resilience and a cleaner urban environment.

With tenders already being issued for multiple divisions, Hyderabad’s transition towards a more modern electricity distribution system is beginning to move from planning into implementation. TG Southern Power
