Science and Technology Key to Protecting Oceans: Experts at World Oceans Day 2026

At the World Oceans Day celebrations hosted by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad, experts emphasized that safeguarding oceans requires stronger integration of science, technology, and international cooperation.

Marking this year’s theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with Our Ocean,” INCOIS launched two major initiatives:

🔹 NIRMAL Sagar – A marine litter tracking programme for the Indian Ocean Region that leverages satellite remote sensing, ocean modelling, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to identify pollution hotspots and support targeted clean-up efforts.

🔹 INCOIS Research Scholars Collective (IRSC) – A student-led platform designed to foster mentorship, interdisciplinary research, outreach, and academic collaboration among emerging ocean scientists.

INCOIS Director Balakrishnan Nair T.M. highlighted the critical role of ocean science in sustainable development and disaster resilience. Experts also stressed the importance of strengthening ocean observation systems, improving ocean literacy, and promoting science-based ocean governance.

The event featured technical discussions on the blue economy, climate change, marine resources, and international cooperation, alongside outreach activities encouraging public participation in ocean conservation.
