Hyderabad’s Uday Ruddarraju Appointed CTO for Compute at OpenAI

Hyderabad: In a proud moment for Hyderabad and India’s technology community, Hyderabad-born Uday Ruddarraju, an alumnus of Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT), has been appointed as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Compute at OpenAI. His elevation to this prestigious leadership role marks another significant achievement for Indian talent on the global technology stage.

Ruddarraju’s appointment comes nearly a year after joining OpenAI from xAI, where he served as the Head of Infrastructure Engineering. At OpenAI, he initially led the company’s Compute and Infrastructure teams, playing a crucial role in expanding the organization’s large-scale computing capabilities. With his promotion to CTO for Compute, he will now lead the engineering efforts behind one of the world’s most advanced AI computing infrastructures that power frontier artificial intelligence models, including GPT-5 and future generations of AI systems.

Born and educated in Hyderabad, Uday began his academic journey at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT), one of the city’s leading engineering institutions. In 2011, he moved to the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering at the University of Minnesota, laying the foundation for an exceptional career in technology.

Over the years, he built an impressive professional journey by working with some of the world’s leading technology companies, including eBay and Robinhood in San Francisco. His expertise in large-scale infrastructure engineering and distributed computing later led him to xAI, where he headed infrastructure engineering before joining OpenAI.

Sharing the news of his new role on LinkedIn, Ruddarraju expressed excitement about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. He revealed that OpenAI is preparing for an ambitious expansion of its computing capabilities to support increasingly powerful AI models. According to him, the company is building one of the world’s largest compute footprints, requiring innovation across multiple engineering disciplines, including distributed systems, networking, storage, hardware design, manufacturing, and large-scale data centre development involving civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

Reflecting on his first year at OpenAI, Ruddarraju described it as an incredibly rewarding experience. He said his team has successfully brought substantial new computing capacity online while developing the advanced systems necessary to train frontier AI models. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve rapidly, he emphasized that the engineering challenges are becoming increasingly complex, demanding innovation at every layer of the technology stack.

His achievement has been warmly celebrated by his alma mater, Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology. CBIT Principal Prof. C. V. Narasimhulu congratulated Ruddarraju, stating that his remarkable journey from the classrooms of CBIT to a senior leadership position at one of the world’s most influential AI organizations reflects excellence, perseverance, technical brilliance, and visionary leadership. Human Talent Key Even as AI Advances, Says Google CEO Sundar Pichai

Even as artificial intelligence continues to evolve rapidly, Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that human talent remains central to innovation. Speaking at the Bloomberg Technology Conference in San Francisco, Pichai said Alphabet, Google’s parent company, will continue to expand its engineering workforce at least into 2026.

“We expect to grow from our current engineering base even into next year,” said Pichai. “It allows us to do more with the opportunity space. I just view this as making engineers dramatically more productive—getting a lot of the mundane aspects out of what they do.”

While U.S. tech giants like Microsoft have trimmed staff this year to offset the enormous investments required to lead in AI, Pichai stressed that Google remains committed to hiring. Google itself has undergone rounds of layoffs in recent years to redirect resources toward key growth areas, particularly AI.

Still, Pichai struck a balanced tone—optimistic about AI’s potential, yet realistic about its current limitations.

“While AI excels in areas like coding, the models continue to make basic mistakes,” he noted. “So are we on an absolute path to AGI [artificial general intelligence]? I don’t think anyone can say for sure.”

AGI refers to the long-term goal of building AI systems that match or exceed human performance across a wide range of tasks. Pichai acknowledged the ambition but cautioned against overconfidence.

Meanwhile, as Google incorporates more AI-generated content into its search results, some publishers have raised concerns that AI answers might reduce web traffic to their sites. Pichai responded by reaffirming Google’s commitment to maintaining a healthy ecosystem for content creators.

“Compared to most companies in the world, we take care to design an experience that showcases links,” he said. “We took a long time testing AI overviews and prioritized approaches that drive high-quality traffic out. I’m confident that many years from now, that’s how Google will continue to operate.”

Syneriq Global Launches AI-First Global Capability Centre in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 12 — Syneriq Global has inaugurated its AI-First Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad, marking a significant milestone in the city’s evolution as a hub for AI-driven innovation. Telangana IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu lauded the initiative, emphasizing its role in propelling Hyderabad towards becoming a global leader in AI product development.

“Artificial Intelligence is embedding itself deeply in every industry and aspect of life. Hyderabad has the talent, and we must transition from merely coding to developing and exporting AI products worldwide. The city should establish itself as a Global Value Centre,” Sridhar Babu stated at the launch event.

The ₹50-crore investment in the new GCC will accelerate Syneriq Global’s expansion, with plans to double its workforce to 1,500 employees and target $150 million in revenue. The 40,000-square-foot facility will serve as an AI innovation hub, focusing on product engineering, research, and incubation for AI-driven startups.

Syneriq Global’s founder, Sudhakar Pennam, highlighted the company’s AI-powered platforms, including Zyrix, KITAP, and DQ Gateway, which were developed at its Hyderabad innovation lab. The facility aims to foster cutting-edge advancements in AI and deep-tech solutions.

Telangana has witnessed a surge in Global Capability Centres across various industries, a trend actively supported by the state government. Sridhar Babu noted that Hyderabad already hosts over 300 GCCs, collectively employing more than two lakh professionals.

Madan Mohan Rao, MLA from Nizamabad, emphasized Hyderabad’s growing prominence in AI and deep-tech sectors, predicting a strong economic future for the city. “GCCs like this are setting the stage for Hyderabad to surpass other major tech cities. The state government is proactively securing investments and strengthening infrastructure to support this transformation,” he added.

As part of broader AI-focused initiatives, Telangana is planning a 200-acre AI city, further reinforcing Hyderabad’s reputation as a global technology powerhouse.
